Why does my website host matter?

Written by ges on . Posted in Web Design

Website host is in the simplest of terms makes sure your website can be seen.  Why spend hundreds of hours designing, maintaining and improving your site if nobody can get it to load?  A web server is very similar to your desktop computer it has CPU, hard drive, memory, etc but it just had many of each.  Beyond great hardware a good host needs the following:

  • Redundant power with both UPS and generators
  • Cooling, Fire Suppression, Security
  • Redundant fiber access points and multiple internet providers
  • Staff onsite 24×7 to fix any problems that may come up
  • Offsite backups with offsite nameservers in case your server goes down
  • Experience hosting your type (e-commerce, blog, etc) & traffic level (5000 hits a year or a minute) of site.

GES does have these and many other things in place, does your host if not maybe it is time to reach out to us?

Why hire a professional website designer?

Written by ges on . Posted in Web Design

A professional website designer does something in minutes that can take you hours of your time.  Ask yourself an important question, what is my time worth?  If you are a true professional of your craft then bill your customers for what you do, don’t lose billable time trying to become a web designer.

Let us use as an example you have a billable rate of $1000 a day in your profession and instead of billing your customers for your time you decide to build your website.  You need to learn what you are doing, buy software to do it, find hosting , create images to use, design all the pages and after a few months of your time you may have saved pennies while you lost a lot of billable.

Lets say for this example that is takes just a month to accomplish this task at the cost of $30,000 in billing what did you safe only $2500 for our small business package.  Do the math it is easy to waste your time in business and in this case we specialize in exactly what you are looking for.  Make the smart business discussion and reach out to us today!

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Written by ges on . Posted in Web Design

SEO is an acronym for “search engine optimization” or “search engine optimizer.”  Now with that out of the way let us jump into the basics for SEO:

Create unique, accurate page titles

  • Indicate page titles by using title tags - The <title> tag should be placed within the <head> tag of the HTML document.
  • Accurately describe the page’s content – choose a title that matches page’s content and avoid vague titles like “”Untitled” or “New Page 1″.
  • Create unique title tags for each page – having a unique title tag for each page, helps search engines know how the page is different than others.
  • Use brief, but descriptive titles – short and informative titles is best when title is too long only part of title will show in search result and don’t put unneeded keywords in title.

Make use of the “description” meta tag

  • Indicate page descriptions by using description mega tag – Like the <title> tag, the description meta tag is placed within the <head> tag of your HTML document.
  • Summaries can be defined for each page – unlike titles here is where you can put a sentence or even a short paragraph.
  • Accurately summarize page – make sure to both inform and interest search engine users.
  • Create unique descriptions for each page – to get each page listed in search engine and increase your site visibility be sure to use unique descriptions.

Improve the structure of your URLs

  • Make URLs simple to understand – create descriptive categories and filenames keeps site more organized and makes search engines crawl your site easier.
  • URLs are displayed in search results – since URLs show-up in search results and show in Bold typeface if in user’s query which helps.
  • Use words in URLs – make these words relevant to the site’s content and structure.
  • One version of URL – make sure to have one URL linking to a page.

This is a very small portion of what is needed for proper SEO management, don’t have the time to learn the rest or implement SEO on your site reach out to us!

How do I change images or text on my html pages?

Written by ges on . Posted in Web Design

You will need 3 things to change or update images/text on your website:

  1. FTP program with logon information to your server, we recommend using filezilla, http://filezilla-project.org/.
  2. Download your current html documents and/or images.
  3. Upload the updated images or html files from your computer to the server.

Now if you got lost we will be posting some screen shots to show the above in action shortly.
